Catherine Hawkins – England

Catherine is a Somatic movement artist with a visual side to her process based work that is rooted in being in the natural environment. She trained in contemporary dance and have, for over twenty years developed performance and participatory projects in the North West. She literally moved out of theatre spaces around 2000 and founded a company, Small Things to support
creating performance in unusual places with other artists. This initially began with herself improvising with small personal objects. About seven years later this led her to the work of Helen Poynor and it was while training with her Catherine began exploring mark making with natural materials as part of her movement process on the multi-coloured beaches of the Jurassic coast. Then Pennington Flash Country Park, a short walk from where she lives became the familiar place for her to regularly continue this.
While developing this work over recent years, travelling to new places, natural environments where Catherine has the time and space to explore sensitive movement work, mark making and the journeys in other making this initiates has become a thing that feels like home. Catherine now has a body of work on paper and the soft sculpture she currently creates is about an experience of her body that has been hugely supported by the natural places she has spent time in, in Dorset, Devon and the re-claimed post industrial landscape where she grew up in in the North West.
